BIO

Born at Gumeracha, Darrel Symonds attended Birdwood High School.

He first played league football for the combined Port-Torrens side, in the World War II competition of 1942-44. A reliable full back, he made seven appearances for Port-Torrens in 1944.

He joined Norwood after a transfer in employment, and played mainly  in the Reserves during 1946-1948.

His senior debut for Norwood was against Port Adelaide, in Round 1 of the 1947 season. He was selected at full back and appeared another three times for the league team that year.

Symonds then moved to Sydney due to work commitments and joined the North Shore Football Club, where he impressed as a key defender.

In 1952 he was named vice-captain in North Shore's premiership year. He also captain-coached the club in 1953, and represented NSW at full back in 1954.

A talented batsman, he played A Grade cricket for the East Torrens Cricket Club during 1946-1948.
