There is no evidence that J D Stephens played for Norwood. Phil Robins' research in January 2018 found the following

Stephens was captain of the junior side North Park in 1883.  The South Australian Register of Sat 24 Aug 1883 p 6 said that South Park had secured half a dozen juniors, including John and James Stephens, from North Park. The South Australian Advertiser had a more confusing report on Mon 1 Oct 1883 p 7: “The Norwoods and South Parks were fortunate in obtaining the services of such men as Driffield, Hamilton, Whitehead, Jas. and Jno Stephens, Darwent and Haussen.”
 
The first three went to Norwood and the others to South Park.
 
James Stephens was back at North Park in 1884.  He was with Adelaide in 1885 and captain of the Adelaide premiership team in 1886.  He was named Adelaide captain at the start of 1887 but was unable to take the field that winter.
