(Norwood) Rising Star Award - 2021
U/18 State Team - 2022
Runner Up, Best and Fairest - 2022
Ellen Maple Medallist - 2023
Growing up in Coffin Bay on the Eyre Peninsula, Syme played A Grade country netball for Boston.
In year 8 at High School, she took up playing nine-a-side football and was spotted by Norwood talent managers. Syme then played one game of under 15s for Norwood before she was selected for Port Adelaide’s Next Generation Academy as an under 16 and was then selected for the State under 16 team.
Incredibly, Syme was flying from Port Lincoln to Adelaide every second week just to be able to participate in Port’s Next Generation Academy. In 2020, she commenced as a Boarder at Wilderness School having been awarded the Brown Sisters Memorial Entrance Scholarship. This scholarship is given to an academically talented girl with additional potential talent in sport and/or the Arts, who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to attend Wilderness. Boarding in Adelaide made Syme’s access to talent pathways and opportunities a whole lot easier for her and her family.
In 2021, Syme made her league debut for Norwood and showed herself to be a talented midfielder, taking out Norwood’s Rising Star Award at season’s end. During the off season, Syme pledged to herself to step up her game even further the following year, and so she did.
2022 was a stunning season for Syme. She was selected in the State under 18 women’s team which won the NAB AFLW National Championships under coach and former Norwood player, Tim Weatherald. Both were also named as All-Australians after the carnival. runner up in the Club’s Best and Fairest Award; selected in The Advertiser Team of the Year; and to top it all off, was selected by Port Adelaide with the club’s third pick in the 2022 NAB AFLW Draft (23 overall) and became the youngest player on their list at just 17 and still attending school.
Since 2023, Syme has limited opportunity to play for Norwood due to her AFLW commitments with Port Adelaide. However, she won the 2023 Ellen Maple Medal with 21 disposals, seven tackles and three clearances, and her presence around the club in 2023 and 2024 as an AFLW player has been beneficial to the group.
As a player, Syme is known as a tough midfielder with plenty of on-field voice, her hard running and her efficient disposal.
