Brad Snell
Year Coached: 2023
Assistant League Coach (Midfield) - 2022
Brad Snell began his coaching career as head coach of the u/16 boys at the Marion Football Club in 2005. He coached the under 18s there the following year, before moving to the Colonel Light Gardens Football Club as a Senior Men’s Assistant Coach in 2007 and Head Coach by 2009. From 2011, he spent three seasons coaching the Norwood under 15 boys before concentrating on coaching within a secondary school environment at Mackillop College and then Wilderness School (including football, touch football, soccer and indoor soccer).
In 2022, Snell returned to Norwood as an Assistant Coach (Midfield) for the Women’s League team under Head Coach Mat Creeper. With the departure of Creeper at the end of 2022, Snell was appointed head coach of the women’s League team in 2023.
During 2023, Snell combined his coaching responsibilities at Norwood with an accelerating career as a leader at Wilderness School, including school sports coaching as well. Often coaching from ground level by the boundary, Snell wore his heart on his sleeve and rode every bump, tackle and goal that was earned or conceded, and would occasionally offer himself some constructive thoughts out loud on inconsistent or odd umpiring decisions, and the often frustrating anti-density rule. (The rapid growth of women’s football had stretched umpiring resources and thinned the umpiring talent pool at this time, which was just as frustrating for players and spectators too).
At the end of the minor round in 2023, Norwood had finished third and won it’s First Semi Final against Sturt at Noarlunga Oval. However, the following week the team had to travel to the other football extremity – Elizabeth Oval – and went down to Central Districts (who became Premiers the following week).
Affectionately known by the players and staff as simply “Snell”, he was well liked and highly regarded by the playing group and his support staff. A smile was often on his face – when it didn’t have a match-day frown – and his post-match addresses were always constructive and reinforced positive outcomes which the playing group always embraced.
At the end of the season, Snell opted to resign as League Coach to enable him to take some long service leave in 2024 and spend time with family. However, he has kept coaching in another capacity, with his appointment as SANFLW under 18 state coach in 2024 (and again in 2025). In 2025, he will also be an Assistant Coach with the AFLW Academy.
Away from football, Snell is currently the Deputy Principal at Wilderness School.
